In Proper’s latest re-imagination project, creative maestro Kelly Wearstler seamlessly weaves Downtown’s past and present through compelling design, vintage details, and works by contemporary LA artists. When it opens at the end of 2020, it's sure to be one of the top new hotels of the year.
Move over: there’s a new game in town. With city lights and vintage brick as a backdrop, Proper re-imagines and updates an historic Broadway Corridor landmark into a 148-room destination hotel. Award-winning interior designer Kelly Wearstler is once again in effect. Essential to mention: two destination restaurants in partnership with James Beard Award-winning chef Suzanne Goin and Caroline Styne (Lucques, a.o.c., Tavern); an intimate library-lounge, a city-view rooftop pool and a lounge-bar-restaurant. Especially Proper are two singular, one-of-a-kind suites, fashioned from the basketball court and the indoor pool of the building’s sports club past.
You can’t go to LA without visiting The Broad. The downtown architectural curiosity houses LA’s most famous contemporary art collection. With a monopoly on the best of Jeff Koons, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and a sweetheart iteration of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Room, the museum is as iconically LA an experience as there ever was.
Hungry after all that art? The best food in a mile (literally) of The Broad is Grand Central Market, 317 S. Broadway. The cavernous, 100-year-old indoor market is a hub of LA’s old and new food traditions. Here classic Mexican food stalls, grocers and candy sellers rub shoulders with hipster hawkers such as Eggslut, Tostaderia and Sticky Rice Thai Food. Tuck in!
