About

Inside a former townhouse-style palace, Círculo Mexicano is defined both by its original architectural elements and by the young spirit of its downtown locale. The birthplace of famous Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo—whose work hangs throughout—and the former residence of priests from the Metropolitan Cathedral, the historic hotel is now a showcase for furniture by local design studio La Metropolitana. Guests are led to their rooms through private patios and ash-wood doors, while central patio floors of basalt stone nod to the Centro Histórico district and to the volcanoes surrounding Mexico City. Renowned chef Gabriela Cámara, responsible for beloved eateries such as Contramar, stands at the helm of the property’s two restaurants—one offering great traditional dining, the other a café by day/bar by night. A rooftop pool, a barber shop, an art gallery, and the Simple by Trista fashion outlet also await on property.

Location

The Centro Histórico extends from the Zócalo, the largest plaza in Latin America, home to the grand Metropolitan Cathedral, built from the ruins of the Aztec Templo Mayor. The center of political power sits here too: The National Palace, famous for the September 15th celebrations and awe-inspiring Diego Rivera murals.

El Centro has to be experienced firsthand to feel its electricity. Locals are not lying when they say “you can find everything” here: a multitude of museums, colorful markets and charismatic cantinas, romantic restaurants as well as notorious nightlife. This is the only place in the city where all cultures and classes overlap. The vibrant streets provide a taster of city’s twenty million-plus population. A trip to the top of the Torre Latinoamericana will help you gather the size of this ancient city and see the majestic volcanoes that surround it. This neighborhood’s offerings are as diverse as its public. Every story leaves its trace in the myriad architectural styles, jumbled together: From the ancient and colonial to art deco and modernist, there is a surprise at every turn.
